A desk mat needs to fit two things: the equipment you put on it and the clear space on your desk. Start with measurements rather than labels such as XL or XXL, which can describe different dimensions in different shops.
Measure your usable desk space
Measure the clear width and depth where the mat will sit. Include any monitor-stand feet, speaker bases, desk shelves, or other objects that share that area. Decide whether the mat should go under them or stop in front of them.
Next, put your keyboard in its normal position and use your mouse as you would during work or a game. Mark the space you actually use with small pieces of removable tape. Measure the combined width of the keyboard and mouse area, allowing a little room between them.
For example, a 44 cm-wide keyboard plus 30 cm of mouse space uses 74 cm before any gap or edge clearance. A 60 cm-wide mat cannot hold that whole arrangement. A 90 cm-wide mat leaves 16 cm to distribute between the keyboard, mouse area, and edges.
Depth needs a separate check. A mat can be wide enough for your equipment but too deep for the space between your monitor stand and the front of the desk.
60 × 30 cm: a smaller footprint
Approximately 23.6 × 11.8 inches.
This size is worth considering for a compact keyboard or a small desk. It covers less of the desktop and leaves more room around the mat for other equipment. Measure carefully if you use a full-size keyboard: the keyboard can take up most of the available width, leaving limited space for the mouse.
The 30 cm depth is useful when a monitor stand or shelf takes up the rear of the desk. Check that your normal hand position still falls comfortably within the area you have marked.
90 × 40 cm: more room for keyboard and mouse
Approximately 35.4 × 15.7 inches.
Compared with 60 × 30 cm, this adds 30 cm of width and 10 cm of depth. That can make room for a wider keyboard, a larger mouse movement area, or more visible artwork around your equipment.
On a 120 cm-wide desk, a centered 90 cm mat leaves 15 cm of uncovered desk at each side. On a 60 cm-deep desk, it leaves 20 cm of depth outside the mat. Those are geometric clearances, not a guarantee that your monitor stand and peripherals will fit: include their positions in your measurements.
100 × 50 cm: a larger area to plan around
Approximately 39.4 × 19.7 inches.
This adds another 10 cm in each direction over 90 × 40 cm. It is useful when you want more of the desk covered, but the extra depth deserves attention. A 50 cm-deep mat on a 60 cm-deep desktop leaves only 10 cm of depth outside the mat.
Decide whether monitor-stand feet will sit on the mat. Check other desk attachments too, and keep the mat fully supported by the desktop rather than hanging over an edge.
Wide mats with a shallower depth
If you have enough width but limited depth, compare 70 × 30, 80 × 30, and 90 × 30 cm. The custom desk mat page lists these alongside the sizes above. Ready-made designs may offer different choices; check each product's size selector.
A 90 × 30 cm mat has the same width as 90 × 40 cm, but 10 cm less depth. That can change both equipment placement and the artwork crop, even though both might be described as large mousepads.
Check the artwork as well as the dimensions
A keyboard can cover the center of an illustration. Before choosing a design, compare its main subject with where your keyboard will sit. Repeating patterns are less dependent on a single focal point; a detailed scene may work better if its main subject stays visible beside your equipment.
